Chew Valley Charcoal
The home of a sustainable barbeque
The Source The wood we use to make our charcoal comes from sustainably managed broadleaf woodlands, which are either being coppiced or thinned. Coppicing means that trees and shrubs are cut down, then allowed to grow again for a number of years. This method of woodland management has been practised in Britain for at least 6000 years and provides an ideal habitat for wildlife. All our native broadleaf trees will regenerate in this way.
Product Quality Our charcoal contains no chemical additives or bulking materials that taint the taste of your food. The charcoal only needs paper to light it and gets to cooking temperature in about 10 minutes.
Environmental Information In 2006 in the UK, we used 55,000 tonnes of barbeque charcoal. 98% of this was imported and most came from tropical and mangrove forests, where timber is often extracted with little provision for regeneration. By choosing Chew Valley Charcoal products you are helping to avoid such destructive use of tropical timber, and also encouraging positive management of our own native woodlands.
The Products
Premium BBQ Charcoal - a high quality natural lump wood charcoal made from hardwoods, graded to 25mm (1inch). This charcoal will light with just newspaper, and gets up to cooking temperature in about 10 minutes. It does not contain chemical additives or fillers. Bags contain a minimum of 2.5 Kg
Instant Embers Charcoal - available to order directly from Chew Valley Charcoal, call 07742 629 769 - essentially the same as the BBQ charcoal only smaller and cheaper! This product is graded down from 25mm to 12mm (1inch to ½inch). This product is ideal for lighting a range of solid fuel devices. Just place a layer on the grate and light from below with newspaper. Instant Embers can be used as the sole fuel on very small stoves. Bags contain a minimum of 4 Kg.
Bio Char - charcoal dust or fines, graded from 12mm to dust. It is an ideal way of introducing carbon, a natural ingredient of good fertile soils, to your garden or greenhouse. Its water and nutrient retention qualities make it an ideal compost/soil additive. Only available directly at the moment.
