Seat & Back: Hazel from Lower Woods Nature Reserve

Frame: Beech ply

This unique rocking chair - an original design by Tom Redfern - combines traditional and modern methods and materials. Coppiced hazel rods are seasoned, cut and fixed to a frame that is machine cut from birch ply. Once in place, Tom carves the hazel to suit most body shapes.

The chair makes use of the very different properties of coppice hazel and birch ply. The hazel rods are grooved and cut so as to fit onto the ply form. Once screwed in place together with the ply they make a very strong form. Final shaping of the chair is done by hand, eye and trial to give a comfortable and supporting shape for the body.

Finished with danish oil & beeswa.
